Collegians support the Sigma Kappa Foundation in two ways:
by participating in the 1874 Giving Circle and through campus fundraising.

What is the 1874 Giving Circle?

  • A Giving Circle is a group of sisters coming together for a common purpose.
  • The 1874 Giving Circle is exclusively for Sigma Kappa collegiate members.
  • You become a member for the year by making a donation of $18.74 to the PULSE Annual Fund.
  • Each donor receives Sigma Kappa swag.
  • Proceeds are used for Collegiate Emergency Grants and for emerging or unmet needs of our members including funding mental health programs.

Helping our Members Thrive

For more than 35 years, the Sigma Kappa Foundation has proudly funded programs to support our members, including leadership development, career preparedness, mental health programs, academic scholarships and more, allowing Sigma Kappas to dream bigger and Live with Heart. By participating in the 1874 Giving Circle, YOU support Sigma Kappas by building funds for the Collegiate Emergency Grant, mental health programs and other emerging needs.

What is the Collegiate Emergency Grant (CEG)?

The Collegiate Emergency Grant provides emergency support to collegians in unforeseen financial crisis. Grants help keep the member enrolled in school and active in the chapter. Grants can help the member by covering rent, loss of personal property, medical debt, etc.; grants cannot be used to pay member dues.

For decades, the 1874 Giving Circle has supported Sigma Kappas, our campuses and communities. In 2017, the CEG was created using funds from the 1874 Giving Circle. Today, 1874 Giving Circle donations help support our members in financial crisis through these emergency grants.

We encourage all of our members donate annually to the 18.74 Giving Circle as Kappa Omega, Northeastern University, is passionate about helping our sisters on a nationwide scale. We recognize that our combined contributions help members in emergency situations stay enrolled in school and most importantly, remain active in Sigma Kappa.

Mental Health Today

Sigma Kappa recognizes the need to provide resources and counseling for our members. Through increased collegiate participation in the 1874 Giving Circle, our goal to underwrite more critical programs that support our sisters can be achieved.

51% of students surveyed said mental health worsened during college.

60% of students do not believe their campuses provide enough resources.

36% (of 55,000) students polled in the 2023 American College Health Association survey had been diagnosed with anxiety.

28% of those same students had been diagnosed with depression.

Perceived expense/lack of insurance coverage and not feeling comfortable seeking assistance were the biggest barriers to getting support. Click here for more information.

Sigma Kappa Initiatives

Sigma Kappa offers several ways to get mental health help: including written and video resources in The Learning Center to counseling programs with professionals.

Name Your Story: educational programming focused on recognizing signs and symptoms and how to talk about mental health experiences with each other.

  • In the first five months of the program, Sigma Kappas completed more than 3,400 courses,
  • Online modules covering 18 topics, with multiple modules for each topic
  • Modules train members in the following ways: Name It: Identifying Signs/Symptoms of Distress; Face It: How to Activate Help When You're Struggling; and Embrace It: Taking a Proactive Approach to Wellness.

Talkspace: provides personal, convenient and confidential online counseling.

  • New undergraduate users of Talkspace can get 12 months free support.
  • More than 1,000 members used Talkspace during the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Statistics are similar to national trends; for Sigma Kappas anxiety is the #1 issue.
