Community Etiquette and Rules

WELCOME and THANK YOU for being part of Sigma Kappa’s Communities.

Purpose of Communities

The Sigma Kappa Community provides an opportunity for our members to view and engage with more curated content within a protected social media space hosted by Sigma Kappa. This space is exclusive to Sigma Kappas and provides an opportunity for members to tailor content to their specific needs and interests and connect directly with sisters in a unique way on our website.

Etiquette for Communities Discussion Groups

o   Be kind always and treat everyone with respect. Differences of opinion or disagreements are natural. If you're unable to be respectful in your response, then please opt out of the discussion or refrain from commenting.

o   Be courteous and consider your language as well as the topic. Words of aggression, violence, abuse, racism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, ageism, sexism or other discriminatory language or promotion of drugs or alcohol are not acceptable.

o   Friendly discussion is encouraged. Comments that are not constructive (toxic or personal attacks) will not be tolerated.

o   State the topic in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.

o   Link to an alumnae chapter in your Foundation fundraising post if you are posting on behalf of a chapter (for Foundation fundraisers only).

o   Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals, not to the entire list. Do this by using the "Reply to Sender" link in every message.

o   Do not send administrative messages, such as “remove me from the list,” to the group. Instead, use the web interface to change your settings or to remove yourself from a list. If you are changing email addresses, you do not need to remove yourself from the list and rejoin under your new email address. Simply change your settings.

Community Guidelines

To ensure the best possible experience for all members, we have established basic guidelines for participation. By joining and using this community, you agree to read and follow these rules and guidelines. You also agree to reserve discussions and shared files and content to what is best suited to the medium. This is a great platform with which to solicit the advice of our members, benefit from their experiences, and participate in ongoing dialogue. As you review these important guidelines, if you have questions, contact the group administrator via the Contact Us link on this site.  In order to preserve an environment that encourages both civil and productive dialogue, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate membership in this community for anyone who violates these rules.

These guidelines are in place to create a space where members can interact, reflect on our values and learn more about Sigma Kappa. Discussion is encouraged - comments that are not constructive (personal attacks) will not be tolerated. We may remove promotional, off-topic, hate speech, offensive language or comments or any other posts contrary to the Rules for the Communities. Sigma Kappa does not tolerate racism, bigotry, discrimination, bullying or name-calling.

*Hate speech is any form of expression intended to vilify, humiliate, or incite hatred against an individual, a group or class of people. This includes communication via words, symbols, images, memes, emojis and video.

Rules for Communities

o   All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited. Do not post anything that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you.

o   Respect others. Focus on the content of posts and not on the people making them. Please extend the benefit of the doubt; there’s no such thing as a stupid question.

o   Respect the intended purpose of the community. Use the community to share successes, challenges, constructive feedback, questions, and goals instead of products or services that you provide or that benefit you personally or professionally. If you’ve found a product or service helpful, feel free to share your experience with the group in a respectful way.

o   No medical, legal, or financial advice should be solicited or given by users of this platform.

o   Information posted on the discussion groups and in the libraries is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.

o   Respect intellectual property. Post content that you have personally created or have permission to use and have properly attributed to the content creator. Ask permission before reposting content from other users.

o   Post your message or documents only to the most appropriate communities. This helps ensure all messages receive the best response by eliminating "noise."

o    In accordance with the Sigma Kappa National Policy Handbook* please refrain from posting fundraisers, advertising, promotions, specials, affiliate, referral links and SPAM.  National Policy limits Sigma Kappa websites and social media to Foundation-related fundraising only. In line with this requirement, please refrain from linking to websites or Facebook pages that are not affiliated with Sigma Kappa.

  • These rules apply to chapter fundraising and fundraisers as they relate to Sigma Kappa. Individual members may contribute how they wish as individuals, but we encourage everyone to research where their monies are going to ensure donations are used as intended.
  • Solicitation of members via any means, including the Internet, is not to be used for individual, university or college financial gain or to promote any chapter, individual, university or college financial program or activity that has not been approved by the national council;
  • Friendly Reminder: The following are NOT Foundation related: GoFundMe, DonorsChoose, CrowdRise, Kickstarter, spices, candles, Tupperware, R&F and similar and Sigma Kappa branded items.)

Respect everyone’s privacy. Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. What's shared in the group should stay in the group. Any cross-sharing of posts and/or member information and/or data will result in a permanent ban from the group.

*National Policy Handbook - Section VIII.C.1.e.
