Sigma Kappa
Member Education

The Promise Program
Membership in Sigma Kappa extends beyond our college campuses. Our members belong to an organization which
Membership in Sigma Kappa extends beyond our college spans from coast to coast and is composed of women, both undergraduate and alumnae, who share the same purposes and principles. Membership in Sigma Kappa offers friendship, companionship, scholastic assistance, leadership opportunities, meaning in college associations, and a firm life foundation. It is Sigma Kappa's goal to help each member develop to her greatest potential.

Member education in Sigma Kappa is an on-going process which begins with new member education and continues through college and after as a member of an alumnae chapter. Sigma Kappa is most interested in our members developing lifelong job skills, communication skills, personal development, and individual growth. We are proud of the fact we provide our members with the experiences that promote the unique individuality of each woman. Since its founding, Sigma Kappa Sorority has enjoyed mutually satisfying relationships with colleges and universities at which chapters are established. Sigma Kappa provides assistance and develops programs to be consistent with the missions of host institutions and to stimulate:

  • Commitment to academic excellence
  • Personal growth and development
  • Varied social experiences
  • Self respect
  • Responsible behavior
  • Concern for others, and
  • Loyalty to alma mater

Sigma Kappa expects its members and collegiate chapters to:
  • Strive for academic excellence
  • Demonstrate responsibility and provide leadership in campus and community activities
  • Show concern for the needs and rights of others
  • Uphold Sigma Kappa's ideals and goals in the areas of personal growth and development

Sigma Kappa is committed to the overall development of its members, and to sharing and preserving a healthy campus atmosphere at host colleges and universities. To that end, the Sorority:
  • Offers a wellness program to ensure that each member is knowledgeable about social issues, physical well being, values and ethics, emotional development and academic achievement.
  • Provides leadership in the complete elimination of hazing on campuses which host Sigma Kappa chapters.
  • Discourages events which promote a low image of the Greek community.

A high priority is the desire to maintain and expand efforts to provide a most satisfying educational experience for student members which will lay the foundation for the development of loyal alumnae to both the institution and to Sigma Kappa.

Supplemental Programs for Chapters

New member education
Sigma Kappa's member education program is encompassed within a total member development program. The program was designed to provide all collegiate members with support, guidance and continued sorority education. New member education is just one of the continuing processes. Through experience, Sigma Kappa has determined that a chapter needs an enriched program adapted to the campus. New members experience a Promise program that helps them begin their lifelong sisterhood. This is an interactive program that brings them closer to Sigma Kappa and to their local chapter by providing the following: educational activities, scholarship assistance, sisterhood events, alumnae interaction, personal development, chapter involvement opportunities, and a reflection journal. Participation in Promise enhances the Sigma Kappa experience and provides a strong foundation as a lifetime member of our Sorority.

Risk Management Policy Statement
The National Risk Management Policy Statement is reviewed and signed by all chapter members and submitted to our national headquarters. Sigma Kappa also requires chapters to post the Risk Management Policy Statement in their chapter quarters, if applicable.

Personal Development
Each chapter is asked to develop and present programs that address the needs of women students on today's campuses. These programs include current issues of social education. The Promise for Initiated Members program offers many varied topics from which to choose for presentation at informal chapter meetings or to be presented to the entire campus, if applicable. These include a Promise . . .

  • To Ourselves - Physical Health and Well-Being
  • To Our Environment - Campus, Community and the World Around Us
  • To Our Minds - Personal Development
  • To Our Spirit - Values and Ethics

Understanding that personal development does not end with collegiate days, Sigma Kappa is developing the last component of our Promise triangle - Promise for Alumnae Members. This interactive program guide for use by our alumnae chapter members was unveiled at convention 2000.

Officer Training
Sigma Kappa has a three-tier approach to training our officers. It is entitled the Academy Series. This consists of Collegiate Officer's Academy® for our collegiate chapter officers and Advisor's Academy® for the advisory boards of our collegiate chapters.

A minimum standard of excellence for our collegiate chapters is to host a Collegiate Officer's Academy® each year. This two-day event is designed to develop leadership skills by providing practical and applicable tools. Various individual and group activities are used to foster the learning process. The event includes all chapter officers, executive council, and advisors. The chapters are left with several modules that can be completed as informal programming throughout the year.

Sigma Kappa also presents an Advisor's Academy® for the boards that work with our collegiate chapters. This is a one-day event that focuses on effective advising skills. The Academy includes time for individual advisor in-depth training.

Our alumnae chapter officers participate in the Alumnae Academy®. This is a one-day event that familiarizes Sigma Kappa alumnae with the national organization and the resources available to them. They work through exercises that help them pull together as a team and set attainable goals for their chapter. There programs are facilitated by a variety of trained national officers.

Leadership Development Workshops
Sigma Kappa Field Consultants conduct leadership workshops for chapter officers. These workshops are conducted on a yearly basis. An important role of the Field Consultant in residence with a colony/chapter is to conduct a number of these specialized workshops for the new colony/chapter officers. The workshops include topics such as: time management; basic organization; team building exercises; national policies, and rules.

Other specialized training seminars are conducted at various times throughout the year and in varying regions of the country. These can focus on any range of topics including: finance, scholarship, ritual, and risk management.

Convention, College Officer Training School, Regional Meetings
Sigma Kappa national conventions are held in the even numbered years. College Officer Training School (COTS) is held in the odd numbered years. Regional and state conferences are also held in the odd numbered years. These meetings serve as continuing resources for new materials, and continuing education for collegiate and alumnae chapter members and officers.
