Sigma Kappa to host Battle of the Sexes"
"Everything you can do, I can do better" is the motto of the Battle of the Sexes, a new philanthropy event to support Alzheimer's research sponsored by Sigma Kappa Sorority. The event, held in Ball Gymnasium Sunday from 12:30 to 5pm, will bring friendly competition to Ball State University's campus. In the past Sigma Kappa held Aces High, a casino-inspired event, to raise money for its cause, but without much success. Raising around $1,000 in 2008 with a turnout of 30 to 45 people, the sorority decided to take a new approach. To read the full article, click here.

Sigma Kappa philanthropy week is "Ultra Violet"
For most, this week is like any other. For Sigma Kappa, it’s Ultra Violet. Whether walking down the Quad or perusing Facebook, it is likely that students have either seen or heard about Sigma Kappa’s Ultra Violet campaign. The sorority has created a new national campaign for all chapters of Sigma Kappa around the country, said Susan Dolinski, a junior in LAS and president of Sigma Kappa. “This is the first time that we are conducting all of our philanthropy events in one week,” said Maggie Tinkoff, junior in Education and foundation chair of Sigma Kappa. Making these week-long Ultra Violet campaign events possible involved an incredible amount of planning. “Each event requires careful consideration and each member of Sigma Kappa is expected to help out in each Ultra Violet event,” Tinkoff said. The amount of preparation needed surprised some members of the sorority. “This was a really big event to plan. I didn’t really realize how much planning had to be done until we actually started it,” said Liz Cleveland, sophomore in LAS and secretary of Sigma Kappa. The Ultra Violet events consist of Sigma Kappa sisters canning, or asking for monetary donations throughout the week. Members can be found canning on the Quad during the day and in front of Insomnia Cookies at night, Cleveland said. To read the full article, click here.

Initiation lets sorority members reflect on values
As a general whole, sorority members reflect upon their membership, especially during the time leading up to an initiation ceremony. Initiation is the time when new members are welcomed into their sorority; this gives active and new members an opportunity to remember the reasons that they joined a sorority and re-evaluate their ideals and values. This week is “I-Week,” or Initiation Week, for Sigma Kappa sorority. Each evening there is a bonding activity that reminds each member of her experiences in the sorority. The week’s activities lead up to the culminating event of initiation on Friday evening. The different activities have some relation to important aspects and symbols of the sorority. For example, because the official jewel of Sigma Kappa is the pearl, Monday night was “Pearl Night.” After circling up, each woman obtained a pearl. Beginning with one piece of plain stretchy string, each woman strung her pearl on the string, one by one. While doing so, she explained what she was excited to offer the sorority. Many mentioned friendship, loyalty, laughter, fun, and so on. Me? I think everyone, greek or not, should devote next week to being an inspirational week of some sorts. If nothing else, remind your friends why you are thankful for them. Tell your family reasons that you love them. After all, sharing a little happiness can never hurt.
